The Ultimate Gift Movie
McCooK, Nebraska
The charitable foundations of McCook are uniting to present "The Ultimate Gift," a full-length movie that celebrates the joy of giving.
The movie - which stars Brian Dennehy, James Garner and an 11-year-old film phenom named Abigail Breslin - will be shown on the big screen at the Fox Theatre in McCook on Thursday, May 1, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
There is no cost for admission. "This movie is so important that we want everyone to see it," said Mark Graff, a member of McCook's Charitable Giving Task Force.
"The Ultimate Gift" began with a little book published several years ago. The story tells about 12 tasks - or gifts - devised by a wealthy grandfather in order for a trust fund baby, Jason Stevens, to receive a big inheritance.
The challenge sends Jason on a journey of self-discovery, forcing him to determine what's most important in life: money or happiness.
The book and movie have spurred a nationwide movement, prompting people to give to others, connect with friends and family, and help those in need.
James Garner, who plays Jason's grandfather, Red Stephens, is a fan of the movie's message. "If you want to take your family to see a movie that will teach them about life lessons and the importance of character, this is the film to see," he said.
The May 1 showing of "The Ultimate gift" is presented by the Charitable Giving Task Force of McCook's HomeTown Competiveness program. Members include the McCook Community Foundation, the McCook College Foundation, the Coimmunity Hospital Health Foundation, the Hillcrest Nursing Home Foundation, the George W. Norris Foundation, the Bison Newsletter Committee, the Ed Thomas YMCA, the McCook Library Foundation, the McCook Schools Foundation and the Fox Theatre Alliance for the Encouragement of the Visual and Performing Arts.
The free admission is made possible by the sponsorship of business and professional firms in the McCook area.
